Active Citizenship through Sport | Young Delegates meeting 2019

Updated: Dec 3, 2019

“The Active Citizenship through Sport", a manual on how we can use sport to encourage active participation of youth in the society will be the most important outcome of the Young Delegates meeting in Budapest, as ENGSO Youth uses sport as a tool for social change.

35 participants took part in a Young Delegates meeting which was held on 22-26 November 2019 in Budapest, Hungary. The event was supported by Council of Europe through the European Youth Foundation with an aim of implementing the Council of Europe’s principles of the Revised European Charter on the Participation of Young People in Local and Regional Life and to further disseminate the Have Your Say! manual.

The meeting began with the welcome session where the young delegates had a chance to get to know each other. They also had the opportunity to get familiar with the work of ENGSO Youth and its committee members. Day one concluded with a team-building activity which used sport as a tool to connect the participants and motivate to work together towards a common goal.

Sunday morning was devoted to the introduction of the Have Your Say! manual, and to the “Active Citizenship through Sport” workshop. Both sessions were led by the official trainers Laci and Iva. After getting familiar with the basics about the Have Your Say! initiative, the participants started to work on the main outcome of the meeting – the toolkit.

The Young Delegates meeting raised a lot of questions and sparked a debate about the issues young people are facing in the world of sport;

  • Are young people interested in active participation in the society, using sport as a platform?

  • Are there any opportunities for youth to participate in decision-making processes (in sport)?

  • How much does culture dictate participation in sport?

  • How to encourage young people to be more active (in all fields of society)?

All participants agreed trust is the strongest driving force when it comes to encouraging and engaging young people in active citizenship.

The event finished with an active afternoon - ice skating in the centre of Budapest and a farewell evening.

The Active Citizenship through Sport toolkit will be released in the upcoming days.

ENGSO Youth would like to thank the Council of Europe and the European Youth Foundation for their support of the Young Delegates meeting.
