Seminar to empower sport for young people with a disability

From 15 to 20 September ENGSO Youth organized the seminar “Sport Unified: how sport is a tool for inclusion of diversity” co-funded by the European Youth Foundation to educate (future) coaches and PE teacher show to adjust sport for disabled young people. Almost 40 youth workers/coaches/educators from all over Europe exchanged their visions, ideas and best practices on how to increase the sport participation of children and young people with disability in Sassari, Italy.

One of the goals of seminar was to ensure participants understand the possibilities to adapt sessions and sports and make them more inclusive. To introduce the participants to the topic, Afke Kerkstra (researcher Inholland) gave a presentation about the Sport Enables Disabled Youth - SEDY project. SEDY is project cofunded by the programme Erasmus+ in which ENGSO Youth is partner in charge of dissemination among youth workers and youth organizations. Participants critically questioned the relationship between sport and social inclusion and analysed the pros and cons of sport for inclusion of young people with a disability. Also the barriers in sport for young people with a disability were discussed and to develop critical thinking to break stereotypes. The final aim of this seminar is to create a common tool on youth sport and disability which can be used by everyone, not only expert, in a different context in Europe, to increase the social integration of young people with a disability through sport. Participant and ENGSO Youth Delegate, Roberto Sojo from Spain, about the seminar: “I found the seminar very interesting and useful for my job in sport promotion. I learned new tools, exercises and activities that I can use in my job. Now I have a better idea what young people with a disability need and I have many ideas that I can apply in my city.”

The event in Sassari was also hosted by the Municipality of Sassari who sent the director in charge of youth and sport of the city to meet the participants. The representatives of the municipalities invited ENGSO Youth to realize a pilot activity to test the toolkit in Sassari and they will organize with them a big inclusive sport event in 2017. The seminar was organized by Sara Massini, ENGSO Youth’s project analyst.
