How sport is a tool for inclusion?
From 15 to 20 September more than 30 young sport professionals were searching for the answer in Sassari, Italy, where a study session was taking place organized by ENGSO Youth, based on the SEDY (Sport Empowers Disabled Youth) project.
Participants were working together for four full days, supported by six trainer towards the creation of a toolkit which will serve as a source of ideas and activities to help disabled people be more physically active. The event happened during the European Week of Sport, therefore the participants were striving to #beactive during the official program and in their free time. Some took part in yoga lessons in the morning, held by a professional instructor, Ioana Hudita, ENGSO Youth young delegate. Some went jogging in the mornings on the streets of Sassari, demonstrating that doing physical activities don’t necessarily need expensive equipment, while all of them learned sports, games and some even folk dances from each other.
The participants also drafted a position paper on the topic of the event, which will be finalized and then used by ENGSO Youth. The participants also met the Committee of ENGSO Youth, as the leadership of the organization held its meeting during the seminar, so the Committee had a chance to meet and exchange knowledge with experts of the topic.
The study session itself strived to be as inclusive as possible. An athlete from Special Olympics Euroasia, Dominik Hohweiler took part in the event accompanied by his coach, Tobias Stabler, while there were two deaf participants, Julia Velasquez from the European Union of Deaf Youth and Maichol Pesa from Cooperativa le Farfalle, who were helped by interpreters using sign language and enabling them to fully take part in the event.
However, the session ended with hugs and kisses on the 20th of September, the work is still ongoing in the network of participants to finalize the toolkit, to be used in the future to make sport events more inclusive.
ENGSO Youth says a big thanks to be European Youth Foundation and the Municipalityof Sassari for supporting this great event.
